Participation Guidelines

We are a highly collaborative group of environmental scientists, educators, and data scientists who strive for inclusivity. We're so excited that you're potentially interested in working with us or our materials! Please see the heading below that best fits your interest.

If you have follow-up questions, please feel free to reach out to one of the principal investigators (PIs) via email and we're happy to try to answer those questions!

I'd Like to Use the Materials

Great! The workshop materials are meant to be used by a wide audience! Please cite us when you use them but otherwise, feel free to teach the parts of the workshop that best fit your audience.

The materials are under an [license TBD] so please cite/use them in accordance with what that license allows.

I'd Like to Suggest Edits to the Materials

Keeping any kind of teaching materials up-to-date takes a lot of effort, and that's arguably even more true for a fast-moving subject like generative AI! If you have changes you'd like to suggest, please open a GitHub issue on the workshop repository.

If you're not comfortable contributing that way, or feel that your suggestions are better-suited for a back-and-forth dialogue, please reach out to one of the PIs

I'd Like to Join the Group

If you'd like to join the group, that's awesome! We are interested in growing our team with collaboration-minded people who are passionate about education or generative AI (genAI).

Workshop development is in its early stages. Our goal is to create materials that help the environmental science and ecology communities to:

  • Use genAI to augment, not replace, human reasoning, expertise, and judgment in the scientific process.
  • Critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of genAI applications.
  • Treat ethics and environmental responsibility as core considerations in any use of genAI.

We recognize that scientists hold a wide range of views on genAI, from skeptics to power users, and we welcome collaborators from across that range who are willing to engage with these tools critically and constructively.

Beyond a shared vision for the workshop, one of the most important facets of group work like this is a shared set of commitments and values. If you are interested in joining our team, please read our core group norms documents and consider whether they align with your expectations. These are:
